Description
My favourite character Dutch Van Der Linde from Rockstar's epic Red Dead Redemption.
Seriously this game has eaten my life for the past 2 weeks.
But now I'm nearing the end of the story mode...
***SPOILERS ALERT!!!!!!***
...well I've realised how I think R* have bungled the characters a bit. It wasn't until I had to kill Van Der Linde towards the end that I realised pretty much all the characters were douchebags.
It started off pretty standard, Bill is the bad guy, John the good. Bonnie was likeable but I hated the cattle missions. Marshall Johnson was a bit of a dick, as was West-Dickens. Seth was pretty cool and not supposed to be likeable yet he ended up being so. And Irish is just a fucking disgrace, hated him. But all the while, (Bonnie excluded) John Marston acted like an arse to all of them for no apparent reason. It's not like any of them kidnapped his family and they were generally helping him in the end.
Then on to Mexico. Landon Rickets was a badass but a bit pompous. De Santa and Allende were suitably nasty but still, yet another bad guy. I was hoping Reyes would be a sort of Che Guevara type who would overthrow Allende and therefore justifying helping him out. But then when you do eventually meet him he's the biggest douche of them all and I didn't want to do his missions.
Then of course pretty much everyone in West Elizabeth/Blackwater is meant to be a bit of a villain, but I wasn't expecting quite so much vileness and racism and I felt their missions were on the whole quite uncomfortable.
Which leads onto Van Der Linde, who in all honesty seemed the only character with any integrity. A sort of reclusive Colonel Kurtz figure who I really really didn't want to kill.
I suppose it's a testament to R* for making us question the nature of good and evil but did they really need to make the majority of characters such wankers? It was the same in Ballad of Gay Tony!
Anyway my tribute to Dutch Van Der Linde. Rest in peace.
