Arrr!

OK so someone recently commented on this pic - [link] and asked "Where is Darth Vader?" which sparked me to have a bit of a rant about Darth Vader.

And while I thank him/her for taking the time to comment, and fully apologise if I came across rude but I have to wonder "What is the deal with Star Wars?"

I find the whole series to be generally very disappointing. In fact the whole canon of SW is always vastly underwhelming to me.

I first saw the original trilogy (as in the original, unedited) when I was a kid and found it pretty boring then. I've since watched the same set of films a few times each and even without childish lack of attention I found I was disappointed - like maybe there's something I'm not seeing that the whole world has. And considering I have actually seen them at least 3 times each I can't remember much about them besides the obvious stuff that's parodied all the time. And even that's because of the parodies rather than the films themselves.

Even when they did the whole "Episodes I - III" set of prequels: I got myself quite hyped-up to see them as the trailers looked cool (double-edge lightsabre ffs!) only to be bitterly ripped off by the snorefests they ended up being.

Same with the video games - "Cool! Darth Vader is in Soul Calibur 4" and with all the hype over Force Unleashed. When I played as Vader in SC4 he's crappy and slow and as for 'Unleashed the gameplay was really samey and flawed. These aren't the only Star Wars games of course but I see frequently low reviews for a lot of them.

I really want to like Star Wars but I really don't. Maybe if I was born a decade earlier or something.

I know that this will be controversial and I'd rather stay on the fence on DA in particular but hopefully many of you Star Wars fans will prove me wrong, argue thier case and wont just call me an asshole or anything as I don't mean to cause offence here.

Fanboys, it's over to you...

GAH! ASSHOLE!

No, I didn't mean it. Seriously, you're entitled to your opinion.

I figure, as a Star Wars fanboy, I'll attempt to explain my reasons for loving it. First, I think it helped that I grew up watching them a million times over. So it's definitely partially the nostalgia factor for me. I also read the books and the comics growing up, and playing some of the games. So nostalgia's a huge reason why at 25 now I still like it.

However, there are certainly problems. Especially the new prequel trilogy. It's full of problems, poor story telling, and very poor acting (mostly).

I do like the style of the universe, mostly. The look of the ships and characters. And I've discovered a lot of the "extended universe" (comics, books, Clone Wars cartoon) are often better than the movies. Plus, I just really love the Jedi, the lightsabers, and all that jazz.

So, that's about it. Don't know if that helped explain why we fanboys like it not, but that's my reasoning. Hope it helps.

Asshole! I am soooo offended you do not like the same movie trilogy I do! Boo hoo, hoo hoo hoo.

I remember liking the original trilogy as a kid but whenever I rewatch them now as a cynical, jaded i-can-write-way-better-than-that 22 year old, I'm consistantly disappointed with everything in the movies.

I think what bugs me the most is that George Lucas can't seem to leave well enough alone and has to screw around with something that, in it's heyday, was considered a fantastic trilogy of movies.

If Star War had been left as the 'second half' of an 'unfinished' sextet and allowed to grow old gracefully, I might not have such a huge level of rage stored up for the whole concept now...but it wasn't and I do.

Also, Darth Vader isn't a badass in any sense of the word - he was second fiddle to the Emperor in 4,5 and 6 and then revealed to be a whiney teenager who was relentlessly manipulated by said Emperor in 1,2 and 3 - so he doesn't belong on any 'Worst of the Worst' or 'Baddest of the Bad' list ever!

I think the prequel is a massive factor into why I don't like the series as a whole. As someone else commented, explaining the character's backstory (especially Vader's) was totally unnecessary. As someone who confesses himself to be a fanboy (although a fan of other stuff) I can see why existing Star Wars fans would be pissed with Episodes 1-3.

I'm not a huge sci-fi fan in general so Star Wars was always going to have to work extra hard to convince me and I do like them to some degree, but my main gripe was with it being held in such high regard as (Empire Strikes Back in particular) the best movies of all time.

But considering The Goonies is my Star Wars I can't give you too much of a hard time :)

I like Epsiodes IV-VI. Like, not love. They are sci-fi and dating heavily now (unlike Blade Runner which was so brilliantly shot it will never date). I'm sure they were mindblowing upon release, hence the ongoing feverish fanboyish from those who grew up with them.

Episodes I-III won't have the same impact on the generation of kids that saw them. I'll still watch IV-VI now and then, I'm not wasting my time on them turgid pieces of shit again.

The games... some have been okay, but nothing *that* great.

The sad thing is, it has so much potential... Darth Vader, lightsabers... bad ass stuff. The problem is Lucas. He's totally redundant now.

There is a live action TV series on the way... if he takes a step back it could be great. Another trilogy seems almost inevitable at some point. Again... step the fuck away Lucas. Let someone who can tell a story handle it.

Start Episode VII with someone picking up Vader's mask. Fuck it, we know the real Vader is dead. I just wanna see some bad ass picking up the mantle and taking on new heroes, with no squeaky toy-selling abomination of a character in sight.
