Arr!

OK so I did it last year with the Dark Knight, and I've done it again - running my mouth off again and getting it wrong.

You see, at the screening of the Dark Knight they showed a trailer for the Watchmen movie. And I was not amused.

Watchmen is as near perfect as comics get - story, art, impact, everything. Watchmen changed everything. It defined comics as much as Maus did. It defined the Superhero genre. So why the hell bastardise it into a film?

Anyway I wasn't exactly silent at my disapproval. I did a second Rorschach fanart and had a good old rant about it then. However last week I swallowed my pride and went to see it.

Now I dont know if it was because my expectations were low but I was pleasantly surprised - for a 160 minute film to get so much of the book in was pretty good. My main gripe was how they'd fit everything i but I think they (just about) managed it. I found that the opening credits filled a lot of the blanks pretty well.

The casting was excellent - Dan Dreiberg and The Comedian in particular. Unfortunately Dr Manhattan sounded like a whiny teen rather than a demi-god but then he was my least favourite character in the book. The dude who played Ozymandias wasn't great either but the rest of the cast made up for him.

As for the look of the film, I was very impressed, though I wouldn't have expected less from the director of 300. It kept a lot of the book's noir vibe and where I thought the costumes looked crappy in the trailers, they actually worked in the context of the whole film.

And without giving too much away on the ending if any of you haven't read it, I'm glad it was changed from the book. The ending worked in the book, but it would have been epic fail on screen. The way the movie tied it up made a lot more sense and so it's best to look at them as separate entities.

So all in all, a great film and I'd definitely recommend it to fans in particular.

Oh, and Rorschach...

...you're a Goddam legend and I wish there were people like you around for real.

Power to the people!

I loved it also, I was incredibly impressed. I am glad you agree with the ending too. I have the same feeling about it, worked in the book and really wouldn't have worked in a film. I think it would have come off stupid. This tied everything together very well. I thought Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II were really good together. In some respects if they didn't work the movie wouldn't have either.

I loved the novel and was also very worried about the movie. I went and saw the midnight showing and didnt know how I felt afterwards. I went saw it again and I really love it. I think the cast was good, I hated the girl who played Laurie, but then again I hate her character with a passion. I think overall it was really good. I mean I wish more of the story was told from the newspaper vendors pov and not so much from t.v's. Agreed about the ending. I think there were lines from the book I would have like to see in the movie that they left out and some of the things that they added taken out. I thought how they even played to gay undertones were really good as well. Okay sorry didnt mean to like hijack your post. ^_^
